Ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak criticized the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad for committing crimes against his people, advising Assad to respond to the will of his people and relinquish power, Egyptian newspaper Al Gomhouria quoted a "source close" to Mubarak as saying Wednesday.

Mubarak, who made the comments from a special medical wing where he was being held during his trial, was reportedly showing signs of "grief and depression," and expressed sadness that his trial was at the start of Ramadan, recalling how the execution of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein occurred on Eid al Adha, the source told the Egyptian newspaper.
