Report: Turkey appoints new armed forces chief

ANKARA - Turkish President Abdullah Gul approved the appointment of General Necdet Ozel as head of the armed forces on Thursday as part of a shake-up after four top generals quit in protest last week over the jailing of officers held in coup conspiracy cases.
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had already earmarked General Ozel, previously head of the paramilitary Gendarmerie, for the post. Gul was also set to announce new appointments to the head of the ground forces, navy and air forces.
