Russia calls on Iran to stop "irresponsible rhetoric"

Russia added its voice to the West's diplomatic assault against Iran Monday, saying Tehran should stop its "irresponsible rhetoric" and work to end disagreements on its nuclear program.

The Russian remark came after criticism from Tehran over Moscow's support for UN sanctions last month. The EU and Canada both imposed unilateral sanctions against Iran Monday, coming in the wake of the UN and the US's sanctions last month.

In the past, Iran had depended on allies Russia and China — and their veto power at the Security Council — to block tough penalties.
