The Defense Ministry announced Sunday that it will recognize Gilad Schalit as a disabled IDF veteran.

Recognition was granted per request by Schalit. In a few days Schalit will appear before a medical board that will determine the degree of his disability according to which he will receive government benefits.

The Defense Ministry said that his request was expedited due to the circumstances surrounding his service, which was spent in Hamas captivity. Schalit was released in a prisoner swap this past October.
