Sudan discusses establishing first nuclear facility

KHARTOUM — Sudan's official news agency on Tuesday said Sudanese energy officials are holding talks with the UN nuclear watchdog about plans for the country's first nuclear facility.
SUNA says they are discussing two reactors — a power plant and a research reactor — that the International Atomic Energy Agency approved for this African country.
In Vienna, an IAEA spokesman confirmed on Tuesday its experts are talking to Sudan and that the facilities in question are research reactors.
But spokesman Ayhan Evrensel says the IAEA can only advise and send various types of missions, while it's a country's own decision whether to build reactors.
SUNA's Monday report quotes Sudanese nuclear chief Mohammed al-Tayeb as saying the power plant will start up in 2020.
