UK changes policy to boost organ donor numbers

LONDON — Britain's government says all drivers applying for new licenses will have to say whether or not they are willing to become organ donors.

The change will come until effect in July and is aimed at increasing the number of Britons registered to donate organs.Public health minister Anne Milton said Friday that many members of the public are willing to become donors, but never get around to registering.

About 27 percent of the British public are registered as donors, while around 8,000 people in the UK are awaiting organ transplants.
