LONDON — Britain's government has promised to change a law that allows private groups and activists to obtain an arrest warrant for visiting foreign officials regarding alleged war crimes.

The principle, known as "universal jurisdiction," has been used by pro-Palestinian activists in Britain to seek the arrest of Israeli officials planning to visit Britain, and that has created tension between the UK and Israel.

Britain's Foreign Office says the proposed legal change has Parliament's support and will be adopted soon.

Israel this week suspended a special strategic dialogue with Britain after pro-Palestinian activists jeopardized visits by Israeli officials by using the universal jurisdiction option.
