UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "deeply regrets" the failure of the Security Council to pass an Arab League-backed resolution on Syria, a spokesman said Saturday.

The spokesman called the resolution's failure a "disappointment," adding that "it undermines the role of the United Nations and the international community."

Russia and China both vetoed the resolution calling on Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down earlier on Saturday.
