UNRWA spokesman Christopher Gunness denied that a football tournament was named after terrorist Abu Jihad, in a statement quoted by Palestinian Media Watch on Thursday.
"There was no such tournament," Gunness said in the statement. He added that the allegations, originally published in the Palestinian Authority daily al-Hayat al-Jadidah, were "extremely damaging to a United Nations organization that has a zero tolerance policy towards political or militant activities in its installations and which always takes action, both pro-active and reactive to enforce this policy."
The statement also noted that al-Hayat al-Jadidah had "issued a full retraction acknowledging the mistake."
