US condemns violence in Yemen, calls for transfer of power

WASHINGTON - The United States condemned violence in Yemen, including an attack on the presidential palace, and called on all sides to pursue an orderly and peaceful process of transferring power, White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement on Friday.
"Violence cannot resolve the issues that confront Yemen, and today's events cannot be a justification for a new round of fighting," he said.
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah was slightly wounded when shells struck his palace in Sanaa on Friday, amid fierce fighting in the capital. After a popular uprising that began in January against Saleh's nearly 33 years in power, Yemen has tipped towards civil war this week.
