A senior US official on Thursday denied a report that US President Barack Obama had promised Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that he would pressure Israel, and would not veto resolutions against Israel in the UN Security Council.

In an interview with London newspaper A-Sharaq Al-Awsat, the official said that the New York Times report was inaccurate and that US policy towards Israel in the UN would not change.

He said that Washington supports Israel's right to defend itself and opposes attempts to unjustly criticize Israel.
