US restores wilderness rules for public lands

DENVER — Millions of acres (hectares) of undeveloped land in the US are once again eligible for federal wilderness protections, with US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar saying he's undoing a Bush-era policy that barred the recommendation of new wilderness areas.

Salazar announced Thursday that the agency is repealing 2003's so-called "No More Wilderness" policy adopted during the tenure of former Interior Secretary Gale Norton, who served under former US President George W. Bush.

That policy stated that new areas could not be recommended for wilderness protection by the US Bureau of Land Management. It also prevented recommended lands from being protected during the review.
