US to sanction Syrians over violence, sources say

WASHINGTON - The United States is expected to announce new sanctions on Friday against people and groups in Syria associated with the government of President Bashar Assad, said two US officials briefed on the matter.
The officials told Reuters the US Treasury was designating five Syrian individuals and entities for sanctions on the grounds they had engaged in human rights violations as Assad's government cracks down on protests against his rule.
The identities of the targets of the sanctions were not immediately available.
