Uruguay welcomed on Thursday the first 42 Syrian refugees of a group of 120 that the Latin American country plans to take in from the embattled Middle Eastern state.

Uruguay's President José Mujica received the five Syrian families fleeing their country's civil war after they traveled for more than 30 hours via Lebanon and Libya to reach the small South American nation, local media reported.
