Yemen releases hundreds of Shiite rebels

SANAA, Yemen — Yemen released hundreds of detained Shi'ite rebels on Thursday as part of a ceasefire in their years-long conflict, the government and rebels said.
A total of 500 members of the Shi'ite Hawthi rebel movement are to be freed in the release that began Thursday, mediated by the Arab nation of Qatar, which also brokered the ceasefire in February.
In return, the embassy said the rebels are expected to "surrender weaponry seized during the armed conflict."
Hawthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Salam, speaking to The Associated Press, said 428 rebels had been freed so far.
