More than 60 percent of Israelis are not aware of the rights they have as consumers, a survey by the Histadrut consumer authority revealed ahead World Consumer Rights Day this Thursday.
"The results of the survey show that the Israeli consumer is still far away from developing consumer awareness and building a consumer culture," said attorney Yaron Levinson, head of the Histadrut consumer authority.
Within the sexes, the survey conducted among 500 men and women, revealed that men were more aware of their rights compared with women with about 40% of men indicating awareness opposite 30% of the surveyed women.
At the same time, the survey found that the older the age group, the higher the consumer awareness. About 41% of the 55-and-above age group were aware of the rights they have as consumers, while the same was true for only 28% among those aged 18-34. Still, more than 80% of those surveyed believed that consumers were not aware of the majority of their rights.
Despite the inherent lack of awareness among consumers to their rights, more than the majority of the surveyed conveyed a sense of moral consciousness. About 64% reported that they would not buy their products on a regular basis from a chain that was found to be treating their employees in an improper manner, while 29.6% were convinced that they would stop buying from such a chain altogether.
"The survey showed that the Israeli consumer is beginning to understand the significance and the ability of using the purchasing power he is holding in his hand as the majority of the public is ready to punish chains, which are not behaving in a proper manner," said Levinson.
Furthermore, the surveyed consumer public conveyed much disappointment over the parliamentary actions taken with regard to consumer rights, with 75% saying they believed the Knesset was not legislating enough laws to protect the consumer.
