Zionism and the future of Israel Posted by David Turner, Richmond, USA The terms "Zionism" and "Zionist" have, in the years since the establishment of a viable Jewish state, come to be viewed by many in Israel as anachronism, even an embarrassment. In fact the Jewish State is the Zionist entity, the guarantor of the physical survival of our people both in Israel, and in the Galut. And make no mistake, while the European Shoah came to an end more than 60 years ago, the underlying conditions which made Shoah possible in the West did not first appear with the rise of Hitler in Germany. Anti-Semitism was the "scientific" contribution of the Enlightenment for that 2000-year-old anti-Judaism which gave us the Crusades, the Inquisition, centuries of persecution, pogrom and expulsion. And it is folly to believe that the non-Jewish world learned its lesson from our suffering in Shoah, repented its sins and that we are now safe among our neighbors in the Diaspora. Zionism was recently reduced by some of Israel's politicians and intellectuals to merely guardian of Jewish existence in Israel. The Galut is, according to them, lost due to assimilation. That assimilation should be the worst fate to befall us! But if Israeli society has drifted so far from its mission, its reason for being, as to accept the mere creation of a Jewish state as the fulfillment of Zionism, then while the Jewish State will have achieved Herzl's Altneuland dream of a "normal" country, a country where its people are indistinguishable from citizens of any other country, then Israel will not only have failed in its purpose for existence, but will itself have succumbed to that which its politicians and intellectuals recently dismissed derisively in their Diaspora cousins. Israel itself will have become the land of assimilated Jews, just another nation state in the world: the living expression of the death of Zion.
