Irish and Israeli family and friends of the late John White gathered at the KKL-JNF dedication site near
Lavi Forest in northern Israel to pay tribute to the man who served Israel and the Irish Jewish community for all of his adult life. Many travelled to Israel especially for the ceremony. The event, which took place on the anniversary of his death in 2015, was marked by the unveiling of a plaque marking the dedication of a grove of trees in his memory.

John White, who was an ardent Zionist, served as the admired and respected President of JNF Ireland for over 50 years. He edited the annual JNF Ireland magazine Nachlat Dublin for exactly 52 years. Many say that he led the organization for so long that his name became synonymous with JNF.  His passing was a great loss for the Jewish community.

Elisha Mizrahi said that it is a great privilege to unveil the memorial plaque in honor of the late Head of JNF Ireland, John White.

“He did so much to support the development Israel, and the development of this area in particular which is so important to Christian tourism to Israel. John was a person who noticed potential and found ways to realize that potential. For instance he was one of the first people to suggest the development of bicycle paths in Israel, which has become another successful and much-used field of KKL-JNF activity around the country.”

David White, his son, gave further insight into what inspired his father.

“He was a great man who worked tirelessly for Israel, to expose the merits of the Jewish State to Ireland at large and to the Jewish community that lives there. He was religious and prayed daily. He regularly attended synagogue.”

The Ambassador of Ireland to Israel, Alison Kelly, said that John White undoubtedly played a major role in strengthening the links between Ireland and Israel.

“I am very sorry that I never had the pleasure and privilege to meet him.  However I am also happy to be here because person to person connections are so important, especially in light of the current complicated tapestry of relations between Ireland and Israel. Thank you for including me, it’s an honor to be here.”

The current President of JNF Ireland is Linda White, John’s wife. Linda took the reins of the organization after John passed away.

“It is difficult for me to speak, because today is the memorial day of John’s death. I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for coming, and I especially want to thank KKL-JNF for organizing the event”.
