On Tuesday, November 22, the Jonathan Wohl School of Music was dedicated in the presence of JNF UK Chairman Mr. Samuel Hayek, the JNF UK Board of Trustees, JNF UK and KKL-JNF staff, and the leadership of Ono Academic College.
“JNF UK and KKL-JNF are excited and honored to dedicate this new building, which will house the best music school in Israel. Jonathan Wohl, the donor, was a great Zionist and a great lover of music, and this project expresses both of his passions.”
These were the words of JNF UK Chairman Samuel Hayek, who was speaking at the dedication ceremony of the Jonathan Wohl School of Music at the Ono Academic College, a joint project of JNF UK and KKL-JNF.
Mr. Hayek went on to quote Lord Byron, who said that “‘there's music in the sighing of a reed; there's music in the gushing of a rill; there's music in all things, if men had ears.’ Like Jonathan, JNF UK aspires to listen not only to the music, but also to the needs of southern Israel.”
Ranan Hartman, the founder and CEO of Ono Academic College, said that this was a very exciting moment for the institution.
“During the negotiations with JNF UK, Samuel Hayek was very clear – although our campus is located in Kiryat Ono, the goal is for our musical influence to go out to Israel’s peripheral regions, to communities in the south like Sderot, Ofakim and Netivot. For music to be alive, you have to listen. We want to involve and listen to all sectors of Israel’s social mosaic, and we want everyone to feel that this building is their home.”
The Ono Academic College is a private academic institution that attracts a large number of students who study law, business administration, accounting, humanities, health sciences and music. The college actively recruits students from the Ethiopian Israeli community, who receive substantial scholarships and a program of support and employment services. Ono also has a separate campus for ultra-Orthodox students to provide them with an academic environment that respects their religious beliefs and enables them to acquire an academic degree in a professional field.
Professor Noam Sharif, Dean of the Music Faculty at Ono College and Israel Prize Laureate, said that this event pointed to a new direction in Israeli society.
“Music is a universal language. One of the miracles of Israeli society is the multiplicity of ethnicities that we are blessed with. Jewish music has an incredibly wide range, from Europe to the Orient and more, yet there is something shared and common to us all. I want to thank JNF UK for their support. I feel that this is an investment rather than a gift, an investment that we will all profit from for many years to come.”
