On the fourth day of the United Nations International Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, KKL-JNF representatives, along with the Israeli delegation to the conference, participated in a side-event entitled "Adapting to Arid Climate Conditions - Updated Research and Development Practices from Israel". The side-event was attended by about 70 people, who packed the hall.

The head scientist of the Ministry for Environmental Protection, Dr. Yishayahu Bar-Or, who facilitated the event, noted Israel's and KKL-JNF's achievements in the fields of agriculture, afforestation and re-use of wastewater in arid and semi-arid regions.

Mr. Yitzhak Moshe, Deputy Director of KKL-JNF's Southern Region, spoke about "Afforestation Practices in Semi-Arid Conditions to Promote Adaptation." He described KKL-JNF's accomplishments in foresting arid and semi-arid regions, harvesting of runoff water, planting and managing forests in such regions, land conservation and preventing erosion, monitoring and research. Mr. Moshe was very well received, as evidenced by the many questions from the audience following his presentation.

Dr. Jose Gruenzweig of the Hebrew University's Faculty of Agriculture spoke about "Sequestration of CO2 by Forests in Arid Lands." He presented statistics on carbon sequestration at KKL-JNF's Yatir Forest in the Negev Desert as compared to carbon sequestration in forests in more temperate zones. Dr. Gruenzwieg's conclusions are based on research conducted in KKL-JNF's Yatir Forest that is partially funded by KKL-JNF.
The session concluded with a lecture by Zafrir Sofer of Palgey Mayim, Ltd., who spoke about "Technologies for Efficient Re-use of Effluents where Water is in Short Supply," a field that KKL-JNF is very involved in.
After the lectures, representatives from many countries, mostly from Africa but also from India, Bangladesh and even Nepal, who face similar challenges, approached the speakers and expressed their desire to collaborate with KKL-JNF in the future. They were full of admiration for KKL-JNF's achievements, knowledge and state-of-the-art technologies.

The KKL-JNF delegation includes Mr. Avi Dickstein, Executive Director of Resources and Development Division, Dr. Orr Karassin, member of KKL-JNF directorate, Mr. Yitzhak Moshe, Deputy Director of KKL-JNF Southern Region, Mrs. Judith Strasser, KKL-JNF European Desk and Mr. David Brand, director of KKL-JNF's Afforestation and Development Department, who reported on the side-event.

KKL-JNF is participating in the conference as an NGO observer, by means of KKL-JNF Denmark, headed by its president, Mr. Ulf Haxen.
