This week, the president of JNF America, Mr. Stanley Chesley, was given the honor of planting the first of ten olive trees that are being planted near the Grove of Nations in the Jerusalem Forest, in memory of Catherine Eugenia Finnegan Biden, beloved mother of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

The spontaneous tree planting ceremony took place when Stanley Chesley was participating at the ceremony at which the president of Brazil, Mr. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, planted a tree in the Grove of the Nations. Mr. Chesley is in Israel with his children and grandchildren, who are visiting Israel for the first time.

At the ceremony, KKL-JNF World Chairman Efi Stenzler and the Executive Director of KKL-JNF Resources and Development Division, Avi Dickstein, heard Mr. Chesley say that he wanted to take advantage of his private visit to plant a tree. They suggested that he plant an olive tree sapling in the special circle of trees. The Vice President Joe Biden was unable to plant the trees in person due to his tight schedule during his visit to Israel. Instead, the Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. Binyamin Netanyahu, presented Vice President Biden a KKL-JNF certificate testifying to the planting of the circle of trees.

It was therefore most apt that Mr. Stanley Chesley planted the first tree, marking the special relationship between the United States and Israel. "After all, I'm also a president," Chesley said jokingly as he walked with his family to the tree planting site. Three generations of the Chesley family read the Planter's Prayer, and the first olive tree was planted in the circle of ten trees overlooking the magnificent scenery of KKL-JNF's Jerusalem Forest.
