The KKL-JNF quiz on Zionism, Man, & Environment was held at the Rosen Center, Tel Aviv, to mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the city. Contestants in the quiz were sixth grade pupils from 200 schools in 25 communities in Israel from Dimona in the south to Shlomi in the north. The event was held within the framework of KKL-JNF Educational Department Maof Project that fosters educational projects for new immigrants and residents of the peripheries. The questions encompassed topics ranging from the history of Israel and the Jewish people, the history of the Jews, the history of Tel Aviv, KKL-JNF heritage, famous Zionist figures, geography of Israel to ecology and the environment. KKL-JNF World Chairman, Efi Stenzler, sent his greetings to the participants. "We, at KKL-JNF, consider it extremely important to familiarize ourselves with nature, the country and the Land as only those who are familiar with their country can truly love it and preserve it. KKL-JNF has an extremely strong connection to Tel Aviv from its beginnings when we enabled the purchase of the land upon which the city was built." Dr. Benzion Bar-Lavi, Director of KKL-JNF Education Department noted. "We are dealing with implanting Zionist and ecological values within our youth and here is an excellent opportunity to transmit our message to the younger generation here and now, at the 100th anniversary celebrations of Tel Aviv." "The objective is to spread the topics of Zionism, ecology and the contribution of KKL-JNF and we saw that during the early stages of the quiz over 10,000 students participated in the inner-school quizzes" added Reuven Naamat, head of the Maof Project. Aharon Bar, who headed the competition's panel of judges, stated, "Ben-Gurion said that acquiring knowledge of the Land of Israel is necessary first and foremost for ourselves, to preserve our existence and our security. This sentence accompanies us in all our activities and the objective of the quiz is for us all to become better acquainted with our country." The students demonstrated impressive knowledge and answered questions in detail. Who invented the Blue Box? What do the colors of the KKL-JNF symbol represent? What is the famous scientific discovery made by Haim Weizman? Where is Rachel the Poetess buried? Where did the first meeting of the Knesset take place…and on and on… Itai Samuel from Gordon School in Akko noted, "I prepared a great deal for this quiz. Friends came to my house to help me and we went over the material in school. I learned a lot of new facts about Tel Aviv and about the history of the country." Shmulik Asher, from Shazar School in Akko, explained what drew him to participate in the quiz. "The subject fascinates me and I wanted to learn more new things." Osher Benzino from Afik School, Beersheba, remarked, "I succeeded in the quiz we held at school and I was very happy to be chosen to participate in the national quiz although I was really nervous on the stage when I had to answer questions!" Rona Schulz, also from Afik in Beersheba exclaimed, "I studied for the quiz even more than I study for exams! I knew the answers and we got lots of points." All contestants displayed a great deal of knowledge but as in any competition, there is only one winner - and this time the winner was the representatives from Kiryat Yam.
