“We are gathered here to strengthen the friendship between us and open a new window of opportunity for our citizens in all areas of collaboration,” declared Prime Minister of Macedonia Dr. Zoran Zaev during the ceremony at which he planted an olive tree in the Grove of Nations in Jerusalem. “By planting this tree today, Macedonia becomes one of the nations that is taking care of the future of the world,” he said.

Leaders and Heads of State from all over the world who come to visit Israel plant a tree in the Grove of Nations as a symbol of their desire for peace worldwide and a sign of their solidarity with the State of Israel and the Jewish People.

In his speech Dr. Zaev emphasized the importance of international relations and pointed out that cooperation is not limited solely to economic issues, but extends also to areas such as culture and sport. The Grove of Nations event was held just one day after the World Cup run-up football match between Israel and Macedonia. Dr. Zaev had watched the game and had enjoyed seeing his team beat Israel. “In sport it’s win some, lose some, but the most important thing is that we are all partners in the game and share the same spirit of friendship, because that is the essence of our lives,” he told his hosts.

Karine Bolton-Laor, KKL-JNF’s Director of International Relations and Conferences, said that the technological advances made by KKL-JNF in agriculture, forestry, water-resource management and the battle against desertification had placed Israel at the forefront of progress. “Planting a tree at this particular site symbolizes continuity, prosperity, peace, a better future and the ability to overcome difficulties,” she said.
