Meretz MK slams Yishai on 'early' end to daylight savings

MK Nitzan Horowitz (Meretz) accused Interior Minister Eli Yishai of "fooling everyone" with his daylight savings time reform, as Israel turned its clocks back one hour late Saturday night.

"Despite all the committees and the promises, the foolishness continues," Horowitz said. "The law hasn't changed, and daylight savings time ended a month too early."

Horowitz explained that DST ended this year the week before Yom Kippur, as it has previously, leading to wasted energy, damage to the environment, and an expense of tens of millions of shekels.

In July, Yishai announced that DST would be extended to approximately 193 days, from the last Friday in March until the weekend after October 1. Previously, it was from the end of March until the weekend before Yom Kippur.

Yishai explained at the time that the debate on DST's length was professional, not religious, and was not a matter of making the Yom Kippur fast easier for the public.
