A two-year-old girl from Kiryat Bialik near Haifa was hospitalized at Rambam Medical Center a few days ago with diarrhea and found to have a microbe suspected of being poliovirus in her feces, along with Salmonella bacteria that caused her symptoms. However, the Health Ministry and the hospital stressed that the child did not suffer from any paralysis or the disease and has already been sent home.
The girl had been vaccinated on schedule with polio vaccine. The Haifa district health office took stool samples from her parents and children who go to the same day care center as she to find out if the polio virus is in her environment. Epidemiologists are also checking vaccination booklets of children who were in contact with her to make sure they are immunized for polio if they had missed any.
The ministry, which reported this on Wednesday, said it took all this action just to be on the safe side, and that it won't be certain until next week whether it in fact was poliovirus.
