A new kind of artificial heart was successfully implanted in Israel for the first time Thursday at the Carmel Hospital in Haifa.
The recipient, a 67-year-old man, had been critically ill prior to the operation. Hospital officials reported that the new heart, approximately the size of a cellular phone, was functioning as expected.
The patient will have to carry small batteries with him, but otherwise will be able to lead a routine life, Israel Radio reported.
