16 wounded including children during French army shooting demonstration

French officials say a military shooting demonstration that used real bullets instead of blanks has left 16 people wounded including children. The chief of the regional administration in Aude says four people are in serious condition. Most of the injured are civilians. The administration chief Bernard Lemaire told France-3 television that the soldier who fired the shots has been detained at the Laperrine military base in southeast France. He says the injuries were likely an accident but that it could have been a "criminal gesture." The Defense Ministry says it is investigating why real bullets were used. It is not yet clear what kind of weapon was used. President Nicolas Sarkozy has expressed his "horror" at Sunday's incident.
