22-year-old Israeli strangled to death in Peru; police open investigation

A 22-year-old Israeli tourist has been found dead in Arequipa, in southern Peru, the Foreign Ministry announced Sunday night. The victim was identified as Tamar Shahak. Israel Radio reported that she was an announcer for Army Radio and a correspondent for Walla. According to the report, Shahak was in the middle of an extended trip through South America. Her family has been informed of her death. The circumstances of her death are being investigated in cooperation with Peruvian police, and Israel has requested that Interpol be involved in the inquiry. Initial investigations at the scene found that Shahak had been strangled to death, apparently during an armed robbery.
