31 dead as quake hits southwestern Pakistan

A strong earthquake rocked parts of southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least 31 people, officials said. The 6.1 magnitude quake struck in Balochistan, an impoverished province which borders Afghanistan. Balochistan police chief Asif Nawaz Khos said at least 31 people had been killed, while a local mayor said many houses were damaged. The quake was centered 370 miles (600 kilometers) southwest of Peshawar city.
