9 South Koreans killed, 14 injured after being swept away by large wave

Scuba divers and crews in boats searched off South Korea's coast Monday for possible remaining victims after a huge wave killed nine people and injured 14 others the day before. The wave - believed to have been as high as 5 meters - slammed over a breakwater near a beach where scores of people were fishing and sightseeing. Dozens of coast guard boats, four helicopters and more than 100 scuba divers were combing the waters off Daecheon Beach in the city of Boryeong, about 190 kilometers southwest of Seoul, said coast guard officer Lee Won-il. The dead included two children ages 9 and 5. Two of the injured had initially been listed in critical condition but were classified as stable by Monday, Lee said. The coast guard said Sunday that up to 15 more people might be missing, but later said all had apparently been accounted for. Search and rescue operations were continuing as a precaution, Lee said.
