Blair expected to meet with Pope and Prodi

British Prime Minister Tony Blair is planning a visit to Rome to meet both Pope Benedict XVI and Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, Downing Street said Wednesday. A spokeswoman for Blair did not say if the visit was confirmed. It would likely take place early next month. "He wants to discuss the EU summit with Mr. Prodi and discuss interfaith issues, particularly in light of the forthcoming conference on Islam here, with Pope Benedict," the spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity, in line with government policy. She could provide no further details on the conference, except to say that it was expected to be held in London in the coming weeks.
