Clinton poised for West Virginia win, but Obama still leads

Hillary Rodham Clinton reached out for a largely symbolic victory in the West Virginia primary Tuesday over Barack Obama, an outcome that would do little to buoy her faltering candidacy in the face of a rival who has all but secured the Democratic presidential nomination.
Clinton campaigned heavily in West Virginia, where voter turnout was steady Tuesday as polls showed her leading by as much as 40 percentage points. Obama conceded defeat in advance in the state, looking ahead to the Oregon primary later in the month and the fall campaign against Republican John McCain.
Interviews with West Virginia voters leaving their polling places showed an electorate that was overwhelmingly white. Clinton has been popular among working-class whites.
