The European Commission said Friday it was looking at alternative strategies to help the Palestinian people because of the international opposition to their Hamas-led government, and said Chairman Mahmoud Abbas might become a more important link.

"It may be that Chairman Abbas in that context would have a new role of being an interface between the Palestinian side and the international donor side," said EU spokeswoman Emma Udwin.
