EC sees bigger role for Abbas in donor relations

The European Commission said Friday it was looking at alternative strategies to help the Palestinian people because of the international opposition to their Hamas-led government, and said Chairman Mahmoud Abbas might become a more important link. As much of the international community refuses direct contact with Hamas, the EU and others have been looking at alternative ways in which to have direct contact with the Palestinian people. "It may be that Chairman Abbas in that context would have a new role of being an interface between the Palestinian side and the international donor side," said EU spokeswoman Emma Udwin.
