Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer is accusing former president Jimmy Carter of encouraging the Hizbullah to continue its attacks against Israel.
Carter, in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, blamed Israel for launching an "unjustified attack on Lebanon." In a harsh letter, the former spokesman for President Bush and one of the leading Jewish-Republican voices in the US, writes to Carter that his words are "music to Hizbullah's ears" and that his message is "a blow to long-term peace."
Fleischer, who was the White House spokesman during Bush's first term and now runs his own communications company, accused Carter of not understanding the real situation in the Middle East.
"Just as you underestimated the threat of the Soviet Union in the 1970s, you underestimate the threat of radical Islam today. Your condemnation of Israel, the victim, only encourages Hizbullah, the attacker, to bide its time and attack again," Fleischer wrote Carter.
In his conclusion, Fleischer calls on Carter to change his attitude towards Israel, saying that "for the sake of peace, Israel deserves your praise, not your condemnation."
