Floods in Mozambique displace 250 families, official says

Floods in central Mozambique have stranded hundreds of people in islands of water and displaced at least 250 families, the national disaster management agency said Saturday. "The entire area of Pungue [Valley] is completely under water," said Ana Cristina, a department head of the national disaster management agency. She said they had tried to evacuate people in one area of the valley, but could not reach them because roads were under water. Hundreds of people had made their own way to safety, she said, buying rides on fishermen's canoes and finding refuge with families and friends. The area floods regularly, and rain has been falling heavily for nearly a week.
