German diplomat to head EU's Georgia mission

The European Union says it has appointed German diplomat Hansjoerg Haber to head its monitoring mission in Georgia. The mission of 200 unarmed observers is due to deploy by October 1. Haber is current Germany's ambassador to Lebanon. He previous served in Russia and Turkey. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said Wednesday that Haber will have a "crucial role" in launching the mission. The EU agreed to the mission at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Mondays. The meeting also appointed French diplomat Pierre Morel as the bloc's special envoy to Georgia.
