German engineer held hostage since July freed in Afghanistan

A German engineer who was taken hostage in Afghanistan in July has been freed, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Wednesday. The man, Rudolf Blechschmidt, is in the custody of Afghan security forces, Steinmeier said in a statement. "We are all pleased and relieved," Steinmeier said. An Afghan official said that six Taliban militants were released in exchange for Blechschmidt and four Afghans held since July.
