A German official says Chancellor Angela Merkel's Cabinet has approved recognition of Kosovo as an independent state.
A government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the media, says the Cabinet has approved recognition, a final step before the country's president sends a letter to Kosovo opening diplomatic ties.
Germany's decision to extend recognition followed similar action by other countries, including the United States.
