Suspected militants threw a hand grenade at a security forces convoy in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing one soldier and wounding another, police said.
Security forces returned fire after being attacked in Tank, 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Dera Ismail Khan, a city in the North West Frontier Province which lies near the tribal region of south Waziristan, said Muzamal Shah, a local police chief.
Shah said authorities had no information whether the attackers suffered any casualties.
Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in its war on terror, and it has deployed about 90,000 troops in its semiautonomous tribal areas bordering Afghanistan in an effort to flush out the remnants of the Taliban and al-Qaida.
