Indian police fatally shot a suspected Islamic militant, and two police officers were severely wounded when gunmen ambushed them in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Sunday. Islamic militants have been fighting security forces in India's portion of Kashmir for the region's independence or its merger with mostly Muslim Pakistan since 1989. The insurgency has killed more than 68,000 people.
