Houston issues week long curfew after Hurricane Ike

Houston officials on Sunday issued a week long curfew for the city devastated by Hurricane Ike. Officials announced that a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew would begin Sunday night and last until Saturday. Most of the city lost electricity, streets were littered with debris, and police were worried about the safety of residents. Police said residents should not be on the streets during the curfew unless it was an emergency. Ike slammed the southeast Texas coast on Saturday, trapping in their homes many people who had stayed behind. Hundreds had to be rescued and crews were still canvassing neighborhoods inundated by Ike's storm surge.
