India calls on Sri Lankan army to show restraint

India's prime minister said Wednesday that a military victory is not a solution for neighboring Sri Lanka and he supported a negotiated settlement between the government and the country's ethnic Tamil minority. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's comments came as the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a regional party from southern India's Tamil Nadu state and one of his key coalition partners, called for greater restraint from Sri Lanka's army in fighting against Tamil rebels. The conflict has escalated in recent months as the Sri Lankan military has captured a series of rebel bases and large chunks of territory. Sri Lankan officials have pledged to crush the guerrillas by the end of the year. Tamils living in India's Tamil Nadu state have ancestral links with Tamils inhabiting Sri Lanka's north and east and are concerned about their future.
