Iran will obtain nuclear weapons if US President Barack Obama is
re-elected for a second term, Republican candidate Mitt Romney said
Sunday, AFP reported.
"It's pretty straightforward in my view.
If Barack Obama is re-elected, Iran will have a nuclear weapon and the
world will change if that's the case," Romney said during a campaign
stop in in Snellville, Georgia according to the report.
comments came hours after Obama addressed the AIPAC conference
, where he
stressed that he opposed containment on Iran and could use military
force if necessary to stop it from acquiring nuclear weapons, but said
there was still time for diplomacy to work.
One day before he
hosts Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office, Obama hit on
many Iran policy points Israel is looking for from the United States.
But his words to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy
Conference also underscored the differences in the country’s
perspectives, including on the prospects for diplomacy, as he warned
against voices who are talking up the threat of war.
strongly defended his record on Israel and sought to stave off
Republican attacks during the presidential campaign. Romney and fellow Republican candidates Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich will be addressing the AIPAC
Policy Conference on Tuesday.
In apparent reference to the US president's
speech, AFP quoted Romney as saying to some 2,000 supporters, that
Obama had failed to communicate that
military options were on the table. The presidential
hopeful also reportedly asserted, that if he becomes president, he "will
have those military
options...will take those crippling sanctions and put them in place."Hilary Leila Krieger contributed to this report
