Israeli security companies have begun negotiations with Brazilian authorities on potential services the firms can provide during the 2014 Soccer World Cup, which is set to be held in the South American country.
If the talks are successful, the companies will train local security forces in crowd control, sell state-of-the-art surveillance and communications technology, and impart security concepts that have arisen from years of experience in emergency incidents and terrorism.

Mark Kahlberg, managing director of M.K. International Security Consulting, said Brazilian organizers were negotiating for the provision of special training for local law enforcement and private security guards.
“They will be looking to receive advice on riot control and training at this stage,” said Kahlberg, a South African-born, 12-year veteran of the Israel Police. “At a later stage, a lot of security technology will probably come from Israel.”
Kahlberg, whose firm represented several Israeli companies that helped secure the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, added that talks regarding the next World Cup began before this year’s games.
David Tzur, a former senior police officer who now heads a firm calling itself Global Law Enforcement Security, said no deals had been reached, but that talks were moving ahead.
“Terrorist threats become a reality for any major sporting event of this type, even if the host country does not face daily terrorism,” Tzur said. “The event becomes an attractive target for terrorist organizations, and the hosts must assume they will be a target. We can provide an integrated solution, including the security concept, while also overseeing training.”
Tzur added that Israeli technology could also offer unique solutions in regard to intelligence gathering and the establishment of command and control centers.
“Israeli security firms are appreciated for their correct solutions and operational experience,” he said.
