Italian election too close to call

Conservative Premier Silvio Berlusconi and center-left challenger Romano Prodi were locked in a battle for power early Tuesday as vote projections swung dramatically back and forth, with neither side appearing to gain a clear advantage. Prodi said he did not know official election results and could not understand the reason for the delay. "We can't figure out what's happening," he said speaking to supporters at around 1 a.m. "We are full of confidence and we are waiting to see what will happen in the upcoming hours, wishing that we'll have the results soon."
