In a sign of growing ties between Israel and NATO, the deputy general-secretary of the organization, Claudio Bisogniero, will arrive for meetings Monday just days after the chairman of NATO's military committee left. Bisogniero will head a delegation that will hold a high-level strategic dialogue for two days with the Foreign Ministry. During his visit, Bisogniero will meet Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Vice Premier Dan Meridor, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna'i, National Security Adviser Uzi Arad and various Knesset members. The Foreign Minister issued a statement Sunday saying the visit again demonstrated the close ties between Israel and NATO. Bisogniero's visit comes on the heels of a visit by Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola, chairman of NATO's military committee, who was here two days last week to study IDF tactics and methods that NATO could apply in Afghanistan. The timing of Di Paola's visit was considered significant since it came at a time when the IDF is under increasing criticism in wake of the Goldstone Report on Operation Cast Lead, as well as a decision by Turkey - a NATO member - to ban Israel from joint aerial exercises last month.
