The new US ambassador to Russia has taken up his post, replacing William Burns, who has become US undersecretary of state for political affairs.
The 54-year-old John Beyrle has served two previous tours of duty in Moscow, including as deputy chief of mission. Most recently, he was ambassador to Bulgaria.
Beyrle's arrival was announced in a US Embassy statement Thursday.
