Officials in southern Chile urge evacuation after volcano eruption

Officials said that the eruption of southern Chile's Chaiten volcano was increasing and they requested people living nearby to leave the area.
About 4,500 people were evacuated from the town of Chaiten when the volcano erupted on May 2 but some 30 have returned. National Emergency Bureau Director Carmen Fernandez said they should show good sense and leave as a volcanic explosion was possible.
Much of Chaiten has been destroyed by flooding of the ash-thickened Blanco river, whose normal course has been impeded by volcanic debris from the 9,400-foot (3,120-meter) volcano.
