Peru president accepts resignation of sixteen cabinet ministers

Peru President Alan Garcia on Friday accepted the resignation of 16 Cabinet ministers who offered to leave their posts in the wake of an oil scandal. Cabinet chief Jorge del Castillo is one of the officials who has resigned. He announced the president's decision Friday, a day after del Castillo and the others submitted their offer. Peru's energy minister and the president of the state oil company were forced to resign late Sunday. On Monday, Garcia suspended five oil contracts with Norwegian oil company Discover Petroleum after audiotapes surfaced that allegedly captured two members of his political party discussing payoffs for steering business toward the company.
