Report: Land mine explosion in southeast Turkey kills soldier

A Turkish soldier has been killed in a land mine explosion near the border with Iraq, Turkey's state-run news agency said. The Anatolia news agency says a soldier was also wounded in the explosion Friday in Hakkari province, where troops have been battling autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebels. The agency says the attack prompted Turkey's military to launch an operation in the region against the rebel group. There was no immediate official confirmation of the report. Rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, have been fighting for self-rule in Turkey's southeast since 1984.
